There is nothing worse than having a habit of making excuses. Excuses are dangerous because they make us convince ourselves that we cannot handle something that God already gave us the ability to handle.
The man in our text needed to be healed from his condition, yet we find him rationalizing why he remains in the current situation he is in. The man is at the pool of healing but does not get what he needs until he responds to God's instructions. Very often we can rationalize our regression or stagnation in life because it's easier to remain comfortable in convenience rather than wrestle with improvement.
